 I saw something good the other day in his test results.  The Philadelphia chromosome is no longer detectable.  The PH+ part of his ALL (leukemia) has made it harder to fully heal.  Over thirty years ago, this form of leukemia had a lower recovery rate.

Even a year ago, when Marlon was essentially cancer free, the Philadelphia chromosome was still positive.  The transplant cured that (August 5 marked the one year anniversary since Marlon hasn't been himself aka transplant. 

I haven't had a chance to speak with the doctor about this yet. 

First time since the cancer came back that he has had a whole month between appointments.  They have wanted him to come in but his busy summer schedule hasn't allowed it.

He did have a visit at sick kids in June after we requested it.  The transplant doctor confirmed that he was a “slow responder” and that while the GVHD in his mouth was much improved he would continue on steroids.  Just as the doctors at Mac had been saying but it was good to have the other doctor's opinion.

It sounds like Marlon may always have a limited tolerance for spices 

Personally I feel concern that he has been on steroids so long.  It can't be good for his system.

He has an appointment scheduled with an endocrinologist. A hormonal imbalance is another side effect off the varied treatments. 

When asked how Marlon is, I can honestly say he is well and healthy and strong and living his life.  Cancer is no longer part of his reality but side effects linger.


I wondered why the dog was so curious about the “rock” on the driveway until I realized it was a tiny turtle.

I’m guessing there are many out there that feel that Wal-Mart choosing to supply more organic products is a big step in the right direction. I’m not so sure I agree. What about the quality that we hope for with organic food. Wal-Mart doesn’t strike me as the kind of company that is concerned about quality. They care about cutting costs wherever possible. Somehow this mentality doesn’t fit in with what is required these days to offer healthy, organic, cared-for food. What about the small farmers? They can try and create enough of one product to be able to supply all the similar stores in the area or they can continue to do their best, live within their values and get their food out the best they can. It’s no secret I have a resistance to this kind of store. Heck I still have a gift card for Wal-Mart that I got as a gift for Christmas that remains unused. Today, I dropped Marlon off at outdoor school and met up with a friend I have only seen a handful of times in the last 20+ years.  She was in the area for the passing of a family member. i then went for a walk with Mina.  I watched and she poised herself in hunting position and pounced.  I saw a squirrel run up a tiny little tree but also heard this pitiful whining.  At first, confused, I wondered if she had pounced on a nest in the ground.  But the dog ran to me, crying and whining, holding up her paw.  We were a ways from home and she hobbled carefully home after we sat for a while and she calmed down.  She will often run the perimeter of fields, running this way and that.  I saw her longing to run the field as we made our way back but she was uncomfortable and limping. A short while later, I went to pick up Marlon and watched in amazement as he hobbled to the car.  Yes, he had hurt his foot within an hour of the dog hurting herself.  ...

Good thing I didn't get too worked up about the possibilities of this week's hospital appointments.  Continued days of freedom. Linsy had a dentist appointment this morning.  By midday, when I still hadn't heard from the hospital about tomorrow, I messaged nurse Judy.  She didn't know, she emailed the doctor.  Later in the afternoon, I heard they still don't know what is happening and what to expect.  Maybe Wednesday or Thursday or Friday…  Something, someday. We haven't had a Tuesday at home in a long time.   The way Marlon is bouncing around, energetic, full of life and mischief, it has hard to believe he is anything other than a completely healthy, young boy.
