It started out as an uneventful day. Chores around the house, walks with the dogs. Marlon likes to go for walks without me but will sometimes take Mina.
I was setting out on a walk with the dogs when Mina started barking at something. I saw a porcupine and started yelling. Both dogs were dancing around this creature trying to get a nip at it. I managed to get Mina away and leashed her to a tree. I wasn't so lucky getting Pan. They danced together, going around in circles, the porcupine constantly turning its rear end toward the dog. I don't know how many times he got hit. I ran and got Thomas but was able to get a hold of Pan before he got there. By this time his face was full. I forcefully pulled him and, once away from it, he realized he was in pain. He wouldn't walk. We needed Marlon's help too and the three of us got him in the car. Once at the vet's, Pan was very calm, but drooling a lot. I sat with him for about an hour as the time was too close to his breakfast to sedate him. He didn't move and I wasn't sure if it mattered if I was there. I went to the washroom and when I came back, he didn't move but his tail was wagging. Ah, he was happy I was there.
I didn't hear how many quills but it was a lot and he had some on his rear leg and paw. He won't put weight on that leg and has been crying and whimpering. He's in a lot of pain. I was surprised and disappointed that the local vet was more expensive than the emergency vet we went to last time. Yes, he had more quills but still the rates are higher.
